Fabric face masks made in Barcelona - MasksForAll

Just a few short months ago, hardly anyone thought of wearing a face mask on the street. Now the government has made face masks compulsory in public places. If you’re reading this, you’re likely to be one of many people who’d realised you need to find fabric face masks for your family.

What types of masks are available?

The Spanish government has published this guide that distinguishes between the three types of face mask:

  • Disposable N95 respirators – this is the type that seals tightly to the face and is used by staff in hospitals as personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Disposable surgical masks – This is the type sold in pharmacies: they have a rectangular, pleated design.
  • Hygienic face masks – Fabric face masks that cover the mouth, nose and chin and can be reusable.

MasksForAll masks are categorised as hygienic face masks, which are recommended for people without symptoms, and for children.

Fabric face masks have the advantage of being washable and reusable, making them better for the environment as well as your pocket.

The design of MasksForAll fabric face masks

The MasksForAll shop was started by a group of mothers in Barcelona. We wanted to create a high-quality, comfortable face mask with the best fabrics available. We have sizes and designs that the whole family will love.

Our masks have elasticated ear bands and a clever, curved shape that reduces gaping over the nose, giving them a snug fit. They are made with two layers of fabric - an antibacterial lining that has been tested for filtration and breathability and an outer layer with cool, stylish designs.

We also wanted to make sure our masks were of the highest standards. The Spanish government has issued a specification UNE 0065 for the materials, design, manufacture and use of hygienic masks and MasksForAll masks complies with this standard.

All fabrics used have Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which certifies them as free of substances harmful to human health, and are 100% cotton. All lining fabrics have been treated to make them water-repellent and anti-bacterial, and have been tested for filtration efficiency by ITEL. Some ranges are GOTS organic cotton (see individual product descriptions).

MasksForAll is part of the Barcelona community

It also means a lot to us to support our local community – we make our masks just outside Barcelona and all our materials are sourced locally.

We know that although everyone needs a mask, not everyone can afford to buy one. That’s why donate a mask for every three we sell. So far we’ve donated hundreds of masks to charities and local organisations in Barcelona.

It seems that wearing a mask is going to be a part of our new reality, and we think fabric masks are better for the environment. We want to do our part to protect our streets and beaches from the plastic waste caused by disposable masks. Our fabric masks are guaranteed for 25 washes and will last even longer if they are taken care of properly.

MasksForAll is run by a group of women who live in Barcelona. We understand the fears and challenges that families face, trying to do the right thing for their health, their community and the environment. We’re really proud that we’ve been able to create a product that helps families a little in these difficult times.
